a) Sound Effects
Sound effects are used in media to create certain sounds that can't be properly picked up through microphones during the filming and can be added in later during the editing process to create a deeper impact on the audience when something happens eg an bang when something is thrown
These are created by the use of Foley artists who use different objects to mimic different sounds such as the sound of a skull being crushed being created by crushing pistachio nuts in Terminator 2
When we recreated the sounds for the Itchy and Scratchy we did the exact thing to recreate sounds we wouldn't be able to actually record. For example to create the sound of acid burning Scratchy we shook up a bottle of sparkling water and then opened it up and recorded the sound of the gas escaping.
b) Atmospheric Sounds
Atmospheric sounds are used to create a greater depth and ambience to the location a scene is taking place in. This is used to recreate the background noise that would be heard if you were actually in that location. Atmospheric sounds are made by going into a location that can sound similar to the scene location eg a forest or jungle. The ambience is then recorded and implemented into the scene and causes the scene to have a more atmospheric depth to it
c) Music
Music is used to convey a certain tone in a scene in the audience member and can create tension of humour. For example in the film Ratatouille the music becomes quick paced and fast to help mimic the hectic life in the kitchen as Remy tries to escape being caught.
d) Dialogue/Speech
Dialogue and speech are used to give information to the viewer/listener and furthers the story across.
Dialogue is made by a writer creating a script and then having an actor recreate the scene written. In podcasts and radio this is done in a recording studio with the actor narrating the story.
An example of this is the podcast Welcome to Nightvale.
